Areas of Practice
Applied Behavior Analysis
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based therapy method that targets challenging behaviors that may hinder optimal growth and potential. ABA has been proven through research science to be highly effective for those with special needs such as OCD, ADHD, and Autism. Behavioral analytic therapy is also used to support other behavioral needs, such as organizational skills, social skills, and overall healthy behaviors to support one’s needs and goals. ABA can be utilized with all humans to support higher awareness, modification, and management of their behavior.
Holistic Approach to Development
Brandon Perea-Hickam is a doctor of industrial/organizational psychology. A marriage and family therapist with a specialty in play therapy and sexual health. An addiction counselor with experience in technological addiction and other forms that may not be as easily identified. A Reiki energy healer and hypnotherapist to support the more subtle aspects of the client. Brandon utilizes a range of therapeutic approaches to support the growth and development of clients of all ages. Brandon addresses all levels of the human experience (e.g., physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual).
Parent Support and instruction
Parental support and instruction are crucial when working with children who exhibit challenging behaviors. Parents will learn evidence-based techniques and strategies to support their children during difficult moments and situations. Parent support and instruction include direct instruction in the child's presence, accompanied by live examples provided by the therapist. The parents will become more confident in their responses to their children during difficult moments, thanks to the therapist's support throughout the entire therapeutic process.
Family dynamics
Family dynamics and the environment are key factors in the behaviors of individuals and their families. Brandon has 8 years of experience working in the homes of clients and the therapeutic office. Brandon will support the family or individual in identifying what relational or environmental factors may be helping or hindering the client’s behavioral success. Support will be provided to the client and their family to learn new ways to co-regulate and positively shape each other’s behavior. With a systemic approach, the client's progress will be more expedited and will have a positive impact on all those related to the client.
social/emotional skill growth
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is included in services to support clients in better understanding their behaviors and the functions they serve. ACT is an accepted form of mental health therapy commonly coupled with Applied Behavior Analysis to help the client to better reflect on their behaviors and gain insight into what they may need. Most challenging behaviors occur when we feel that we cannot effectively communicate our needs. ACT will allow the client to identify their needs and make conscious changes toward their desired behaviors and overall goals.
Independent living skills
The independence of the client is the ultimate goal of behavioral analytic therapy. The therapy will include assessments of functional living skills to ensure the client meets these standards by the end of the therapeutic process. Clients will work in both the community and their homes to ensure they have the experience and guidance necessary to navigate life’s tasks, both big and small. Goals for independent living skills will be modified to meet the client's age and needs.
